Kiwiana – Kiwi Sayings

(0)
60 kiwi sayings in speech bubbles. 6 speech bubbles on each A4 size page. Included: ♦ Speech bubbles – coloured ♦ Speech bubbles – black/white ♦ Blank template - coloured ♦ Blank template – black/white Great for a wall display. They can also be used as a writing task – how many kiwi sayings can you include in a piece of writing? For example: Nek minnit the bell goes and your students leave the classroom. Sitting on your desk are some sweet as kiwi sayings that you need to display on the wall. Everything is good as gold but you know you need to rattle your dags cause you were asked to bring a plate for morning tea. The food is always mean as and you often leave chock-a-block so you work hard out for the next 5 minutes. She’ll be right. A colleague comes in to take a squiz and she thinks it looks tu meke. She takes a tiki tour around your room to suss it out and repeatedly says “Chur”. You take your time because you don’t want the display to look rough as guts. Just when you think you’re home and hosed, you find 4 more speech bubbles that were hiding under your planning book. Aw, gutted. You’re about to throw a wobbly but you remind yourself that everything is a box of fluffies. You don’t want the display to look half pie so you give it heaps. It looks wicked bro. Your students are going to think it's flash as. Time to head to the staff room. You take a seat next to your cuz who tells you a hard case joke. She’s a bit of a dag. You tell her “don’t be an egg” as you reach for a pineapple lump. You’re a bit knackered after working so hard all morning, but everything is hunky dory. No worries! More Kiwiana classroom resources available in my store. Keywords: kiwi slang, New Zealand, NZ phrases, lingo, colloquialisms. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

Māori Myths and Legends - How the Kiwi Lost its Wings

(0)
This is a fun activity for your students that you can use after reading the story: How the Kiwi Lost its Wings. This activity is suitable for any retelling of the story. Colour the kiwi, write/draw in the body templates and staple them together. Lift the flap to view. Activities: ♦ Give the story a rating out of 5 (colour the stars) and give a reason. ♦ This story is about … (write on the lines). ♦ Facts about kiwis (write on the lines). ♦ Cinquain Poem (write on the lines, example included). ♦ Acrostic Poem (KIWI) ♦ Blank body template – make up your own activity. You can use as many of the activities as you wish (this will determine the number of ‘flaps’). The only activity that is not optional is the story rating because that is on the kiwi’s body. Two Options: ♦ Kiwi – cut the bird out and staple the flaps to it. ♦ Kiwi on page with border, tree branches and the story title. The kiwi is not cut out. Staple the flaps to it. Alternative - Plain Kiwi Template: This kiwi template is also available without the activities for the story (available for purchase in my store: 'New Zealand Kiwi Craft - Flip Flap') ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

Māori Myths and Legends - Fantail Craft

(0)
The fantail (pīwakawaka) features in many Māori myths and legends. This craft activity can be used for any of the stories (or alternatively, for a study on New Zealand birds). Students write or draw on the tail fan and then attach it to the bird. You can add as many tail fans as you wish. Two Options: ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that has been cut out. ♦ Attach the tail fan(s) to a bird that is on a sheet of paper (you will probably need a long-armed stapler for this option). Two Sets of Templates: ♦ Fantail facing right. ♦ Fantail facing left. Writing / Drawing Suggestions: ♦ Write facts about fantails. ♦ Draw your favourite part of the story. ♦ Give the story a rating out of 10 and give a reason. ♦ Write about the story (plot, setting, characters, message, etc). ♦ Draw a fantail and add labels. ♦ Write about where you’d like to fly to if you were a fantail. ♦ Write vocabulary from the story (English / Te Reo). The tail fans are completely blank (no lines for writing). If you would like lines, then I suggest you draw some before photocopying. Designed on A4 size paper. Approximate size when cut out is 23cm by 16cm. The Templates (right and left facing): ♦ Bird with page border, tree branches and the word ‘pīwakawaka’. ♦ Bird. ♦ 1x feather tail fan and 1x blank tail fan. ♦ 2 x feather tail fans. ♦ 2 x blank tail fans. ********************************************************************** © Suzanne Welch Teaching Resources

Two Orientations: ♦ Kiwi facing right. ♦ Kiwi facing left. Two Options for Stapling: ♦ At the neck – turn the pages sideways. ♦ At the top – lift the pages up. Included: ♦ Kiwi – with page border, tree branches and the word ‘Kiwi’. ♦ Kiwi - body (for cutting out). ♦ 1x feathered body piece and 1 x blank body piece. ♦ 2x feathered body pieces. ♦ 2x blank body pieces. ♦ 2x lined body pieces.
